SELECTED
SAMPLE PAGES
Listed and
included below are a small selection of sample pages
from the current manual (FFM 2009). Clicking each link will
open these sample pages in separate windows, where a quick
glance at the left hand navigation panel within each sample
page will show you the broad range of subjects covered by each
main section of this publication. Included are: one
sample from the "introduction" section; two from "orphaned
babies";
one from the "adult flying-fox" section; and two
from the "Health and treatment" section. Note
that any links included on these sample pages below are taken
directly from the manual, and as such are for illustration
purposes only. Therefore, any clickable left-hand navigation or
in-text links on those pages do not actually lead to anywhere
on this site, but instead will produce the - "this page cannot
be displayed" - message. Just click the "back" button on your browser to return.

PAGE 1. LITTLE RED FLYING-FOX
The "Introduction"
section of this manual - covering 22 diverse subjects ranging from how to use
this manual, to anatomy, reproduction, behaviour, and public health - includes
a look at the four mainland species of Australian flying-fox. As a typical

PAGE 2.
EXAMINATION & FIRST AID
Encompassing
48 topics - ranging from why they come into care in
the first place, right through to crèche and release
(with a wealth of topics along the way); the "orphaned
babies"
section covers all aspects of hand-rearing these endearing babies - including
detailed stages of development summaries. When we first bring orphaned pups into care, our first step in the stabilisation process is to carry out a thorough examination, and then perform any required emergency first aid. The "examination and first aid" sample
page is here

HYGIENE & TOILETING
Another
example from the "orphaned
babies"
section is hygiene and toileting. Good hygiene
practices with hand-reared pups are as essential as correct
feeding. Included on this page are
why and when to toilet little pups, and just what to use to
keep baby squeaky clean - and healthy. The "hygiene
and toileting"
sample
page is here

PREGNANT, LACTATING, AND NURSING MOTHERS
Care of
adult flying-foxes is a huge subject; ranging from specific
rescue situations, to assessment of injuries, housing, feeding,
and ultimately - successful release. As a typical example
of the 35 subjects contained within the "adult
care" section are special considerations for pregnant,
lactating, and nursing mother flying-foxes in care. The "pregnant,
lactating, and nursing" mothers sample
page is here

With much
input and advice from many well-respected veterinarians;
ant bites is just one of 66 subjects
contained within the comprehensive "health & treatment" section
of this manual, which covers everything from initial
assessment, to medical guidelines, and using your vet; leading
onto a full A - Z of injuries, conditions and specific treatment
and nursing techniques. The
"ant bites" sample page is here

MALNUTRITION
Serious
malnutrition has very little to do with hunger, or simply
giving a starving flying-fox a big bowl of fruit; but is
a very serious condition which can cause long-term complications,
or at worst - irreversible organ failure. Often a secondary
condition - and compounded by the primary condition that
stopped the animal flying and feeding itself in the first
place (such as infection); malnutrition is another typical
subject covered in the "health & treatment"
section. The
"malnutrition" sample page is here
